Born in 1991, Loly Roots is an independent Brooklyn-based artist from Bogotá, Colombia. Her disciplines include drawing, painting, tattoo and mixed media, where her work stems from a deep curiosity of the fantastical world and beyond. Since childhood, creativity has been Loly’s language, and today she translates that passion into a reality of different canvases, textures, media, and sounds.
LOLY BONILLA
Much of Loly’s work and inspiration revolves around an original concept and theme she has named “Black Forest.” Within this thematic universe, Loly blends dark fantasy and psychedelia, creating unique pieces in multiple mediums that she continues to explore and refine every day.
The Black Forest is not only a fine art concept, it forms the foundation of her tattoo style, which she has cultivated for more than 10 years. Her tattoos are the result of a long and dedicated process. Every line, every bold black contrast, and every psychedelic swirl is designed to transport this enchanting world to life on skin, and bring elaborate pieces with incredible detail and contrast to people who believe in this same fantastical vision.
Loly’s Musical World
Music has always been a central part of Loly’s life. She grew up surrounded with Colombian sounds like salsa and cumbia, but also for example, metal, which trained her ear and taught her a deep musical appreciation. Today, as a vinyl collector and selector, Loly explorers diverse sounds and musical experiences that connect people to emotions and memories.
Loly’s approach to music and visual art shares the same principle: creative worlds that are complex, yet clear. Every line, record, and form has purpose and engages in a dialogue with the viewer or listener. This philosophy informs Loly’s own creative journey, a never ending exploration to expand and fuel her creative world.
